I’m making the dough kind of ornaments. I would like to decorate them to look just like a real cookie with real frosting .Also, if I used royal icing would it melt? Thank you .
Go to you local hobby shop and get the kind of paint that is being used for painting model planes, etc. This should give you a large selection of colors. As far as the royal icing is concerned I really don’t have any idea of it but would suggest you check it out in your search section of your computer.
EDIT
this is the answer I got in search and it appears that you may be able to “smash “it down if you not careful.
Royal icing is a hard white icing, made from softly beaten egg whites, icing sugar, and sometimes lemon or lime juice. It is used on Christmas cake, wedding cakes, gingerbread houses and many other cakes and biscuits, either as a smooth covering like marzipan, or in sharp peaks. Glycerine is occasionally added to prevent the icing from setting too hard.
If you have a Hobby Lobby, Michaels, JoAnns, or similar craft store near you they will carry acrylic hobby paints in many colors and brands. Instead of royal icing, (which wouldn’t hold up over time),you could use the craft dimensional paints that look like the real thing. They also come in many colors and styles. These acrylic paints are very durable and work well on the dough ornaments. You might want to seal the whole thing with a clear acrylic glaze paint to protect the finish when you’re done.
