The snow fell softly producing mounds of sparkling new white houses surrounding. Everything looked clean, as if snow had washed away all darkness and has a new beginning. It was Christmas time. The children were excited and decorations have been hung. The tree was all aglow and under its branches was wrapped colorful gifts. I loved this time of year. I loved all the shops and finding the perfect gift for all my children and members of the extended family. I had every part of my game of the Nativity and the adoration of the birth of Jesus in my church. And I loved how each of my children took all the details inside and illuminated with pure joy. When my children were small it is tradition to go to the house of their grandfather and the Minister read the Christmas story. But when my life took an abrupt turn changed everything about this holiday. Now, our family has been mixed. A divorce can. It may change the traditions and force children who do not want their families to celebrate change differently. Before, all members of my family and my husband’s family gathered to celebrate the birth of Christ. Now, Tori and I were about to start our own traditions in our new house. Tori had invited his parents at home to celebrate Christmas Day. This would be a challenge for Christmas because her parents did not know that I lived with it. Tori had fabricated a story developed around his life. It was supposedly engaged to a man who was in the mafia. A man whose identity was being kept secret to protect her and her son. A story of her parents demanded because they did not accept it has a relationship with another woman. Tori had sole custody of her son because her ex-husband has confessed to the abuse of children. A threat that was easy to fear, since I have been deprived of being a parent with custody of my three children by the judicial system. It was not easy to keep front. During the Christmas period we start making our own traditions, despite all our secrets. We had a two-story house with a basement full. We have two decorated Christmas trees, one in the master bedroom suite and another room in the bottom of the family. My children and I would quietly celebrate Christmas on the floor. To my surprise, they enjoyed spending time with just me. They loved their gifts and together we read the story of the birth of Jesus. Our house may have been filled with secrets, but our hearts were filled with the Spirit of Christmas and love. Jesus gave us the will of the family that God wanted us to be separated from those who do not understand. The day passed, and years has made the secrets we have kept within the walls of our house. No regrets, go back, we found our way because we place our trust in God. The falling snow shone give way to a whole new world in the ignition light. Understanding that sacrifice our traditions are not really what is important during the Christmas period. The most important part of Christmas is the gift of the Son of God and the love it can make to the lives of everyone.
