Antique and Vintage African Jewelry

  • Posted on November 21, 2009 at 12:14 am

The first stirrings of the human being would surely have been heard in the Dark Continent, that is Africa. The first artistic expressions would also have been exhibited in caves of Africa and similarly the earliest jewelry would have also been African jewelry. Excavations have therefore revealed snail shell beads used as jewelry some 75,000 years ago in Blombos cave of South Africa. Similarly crude bracelets and necklaces made from animal bones, teeth and stone besides ostrich shell beads going back 40,000 years in time have been found in Kenya. It’s confirmed that ancient Egyptians made gold jewelry and used gems crafted from glass. If you study the Equatorial Rain Forest Region there is ample proof to suggest that they traded their ivory and gold for copper, brass, coral and glass beads for crafting museum jewelry. Women to add to their natural swagger and attract the eyes of young men used brass hip ornaments! The Lost Wax Process was used later in the 13th century for making bracelets in Nigeria. The ancient Africans from this region also made use of glass beads as well as beads made from clay for fashioning jewelry. The second region of Africa is the Sahara. This region has been dry from time immemorial and it was difficult for the local people to find anything other than dead animal skins for their jewelry. However, silver cross have been passed down generations in this region. Materials acquired by trade have been crafted in simple and bold geometric designs of museum jewelry. The savannah region is the third region of Africa. In this area the extensive use of copper and brass has been observed. Their women used iron and copper necklaces and simple jewelry of spirals and rings. The online African jewelry comprises of large and intricate hoop earrings. These earrings are long; they carry ancient patterns and dangle from the ears. The necklaces of museum jewelry from Africa are generally made of piles of beads. A set of West African Crescent earrings in gilded silver is most attractive as are the Akuava Fertility Doll earrings in sterling silver.

Being old fashioned is no longer the taboo it once was, thanks to the demand for antique jewellery. The more you turn back the clock, the more “in” your sartorial sense is assumed to be. Fashion watchers have always talked about a cycle in fashion – trends never really go permanently out of style, they are simply recycled. Take the case of bell bottom trousers, denim jackets, tote bags, pencil heels, and now, jewellery that is designed on the lines of Victorian, Renaissance, and even Egyptian pharaonic dynasty items. But we are talking about the real thing – antique jewellery, not jewelry made to imitate old styles. Antique bracelets are a good accessory to dangle on your arm this summer – their graceful lines, skilled workmanship, and “antique” tag is bound to grab eyeballs. Understanding Antique Jewellery There are two aspects to antique bracelets: age and country of origin. Depending on these two, the styles, designs, and motifs will vary. The problem with buying antique jewellery is that you may not know all the options you have. To understand the range of historical bracelets available for buyers, they need to understand cultural norms, styles, and symbolic meaning behind bracelet design when they were crafted. For example, you may feel that antique bracelets from Russia featuring birds is something only a teenager would wear; but the fact is that birds in Russia are seen as symbols of love and stability. So it won’t be inappropriate to wear them at a relaxed lunch with friends or on a date. Same goes for Egyptian antique jewellery, modeled on the lines of the treasures found in the massive tombs of Egyptian rulers. For Egyptians, each color and precious or semi precious stone or mineral signified some concept. Red was respected for its boldness and energy, orange was somewhat dubious because it was supposed to bring bad luck . Red jasper however was used only at funerals – more specifically, it was used in making ornaments for the deceased. Green was an auspicious color, signifying fertility and nature in full bloom. To actually stand out in a crowd, your antique bracelets must match your dress and also be in tune with the occasion. For that, you need deeper understanding of the symbolism of jewelry in the days gone by. That is how you will be able to make a powerful style statement.

Victorian Antique Jewelry

The Victorian Era is one of the most remarkable and memorable times in British History. It is the second time, after the Golden Age – otherwise known as the Elizabethan Era, where a British Queen would be accredited and associated with the immense forward movement of a country. The Victorian Era was ruled over by the great Queen Victoria who became the last monarch under the House of Hanover (Her heir took on his father’s family name). This amazing queen ruled over the British Isles for over six centuries and was well loved by her people and her family. This era, like the others past it, had its own style and elegance. They are particularly known for fashion and style which was translated and carried over to the style of their jewelry which they considered as priceless heirlooms from times past. There are only a few truly genuine pieces that are found today and even fewer are auctioned off to the public. An example of fine Victorian jewelry is that of a gold brooch adorned with a beautiful dove. A finely crafted piece of jewelry made of yellowish gold. The center of the ornament displays the dove with an olive branch made of swirling gold clutched in its beak. The brooch is styled in a form called ‘bulla’ which means ‘bubble’ in Latin. This type of jewelry is in a circular form that alludes to its name. It became popular in the late part of the 19th century. The brooch is made of 18 carat gold and circulated around 1880. One of the most important characteristics that effectively date a brooch is the style of its clasp. Most brooches from the Victorian Era had a “bent pin system” that kept the brooch from falling off and thus avoiding loss of the item. Purple, which has long been known as a shade attributed to royalty, was also big in the world of fashion and jewelry during the Victorian Era. This trend is most evident in the style of an enamel pendant that was Edwardian in Style. Made of 14 carat gold, the piece a purple guilloche with a cross design was made with such fine craftsmanship. Nowadays, finding enamel Victorian Jewelry in such good condition is very rare and pieces that do survive are given such a high value. One thing that has captured the fancy of people in the later part of the Victorian Era was that of mythical creatures that can be found in mythology books as well as in the stories that have fascinated nation after nation through the ages. This attraction to myth has been effectively translated into different styles of jewelry including one stickpin of a stylized serpent made in 14 carat gold. The said piece of jewelry is believed to be a creation of the Victorian Jeweler named B. G. & O. The style of Victorian jewelry is an effective mirror of the style of her people. They were very much attuned to the finer details; preferring their jewelry to be encrusted in all sorts of gems and priced south sea seed pearls. All this detail contrastingly lay in delicately forged and molded gold and enamel.
